Dinner for FOUR with Franklin, Disney and Earhart
Dinner for FOUR
The Introductory First Act
The table was set with a clatter and clink,
With goblets of giggle-juice ready to drink.
The roast was a-roasting, the puddings were plump,
And the mashed tater-tots had a marvelous bump!
I looked at the clock, it was quarter to eight,
My Dinner for Four was about to be great.
I’d sent out the letters, the postage was paid,
For a whimsical banquet I proudly had made.
Three guests I invited from times long ago,
To chat and to chew and to put on a show!
Act Two: Benjamin Franklin
A knock and a crackle, a spark at the door!
In walked a fellow who’d been here before.
Old Benjamin Franklin, with spectacles round,
And a kite that was trailing along on the ground.
"A penny is saved," he declared with a grin,
"When you use a fresh pretzel to hold up your chin!"
He sat at the table and sparked up a light,
And told us of chasing the storms in the night.
He nibbled a crumpet, he sipped on some tea,
And invented a fork that was shaped like a V.
"The turkey," Ben argued, while carving the meat,
"Is a much better bird than the eagle to eat!"
Act Three: Walt Disney
Then came a whistle, a cheerful upbeat,
As a man with a mustache stepped into his seat.
Mr. Walt Disney, with papers and pens,
And a marvelous host of his magical friends!
He drew on the napkin a mouse with big ears,
Who danced on the plate and provoked many cheers.
"If you can dream it," Walt said with a sigh,
As a cartoonish castle appeared in the sky,
"You can do it, my friend, with a wish and a star,
Or a ride in a wobbly, toontastic car!"
He chuckled and smiled as he conjured a broom,
That waltzed with the gravy boat right round the room.
Act Four: Amelia Earhart
A roar from the garden, a swoop and a spin!
A shiny red airplane had just tumbled in!
Out leaped Amelia, in goggles and cap,
With a map of the world sitting snug in her lap.
"The sky is my home," she proclaimed with a smile,
"I flew over oceans for mile after mile!"
She didn't want pudding or giggle-juice sweet,
But a lofty meringue was her favorite treat.
She spoke of the clouds and the birds and the breeze,
While spreading some jam on a wedge of green cheese.
"Adventure is out there, just waiting for you,
In skies that are painted a brilliant light blue!"
The Dish Washing Act
The dinner was done, there was nothing to chew,
But look at the dishes! Oh, what will we do?
The sink was a mountain, the counters a mess,
A tower of plates causing awful distress!
"To the bubbles!" cried Ben, with a shock of delight,
As he harnessed a battery’s glorious might.
Walt sketched out a sponge that could scrub all alone,
With a squeak and a splash and a bubbly groan.
Amelia tossed saucers and kept them all flying,
While Ben used a kite-string for marvelous drying!
The soap suds went soaring, they covered the floor,
A wonderful end to our Dinner for Four!
Then they waved their goodbyes and they vanished from sight,
Leaving sparkling clean dishes to gleam in the night.
